AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORK作品导读

A result is the part of an athlete’s story that is easiest to repeat. In this piece about fighter Yan Xiaonan, I am interested in how much of a person disappears when a conversation ends with the latest win or loss.

In my comment accompanying the video, I asked what it would mean to cheer for the athletes who finish second, tenth, or hundredth. That question guides the way I approach women’s sporting stories. I want to give attention to the work, decisions, and persistence that make a sporting life, including the experiences that do not end with a medal.

For my proposed Dartmouth project, this becomes a starting point for portraiture: spending time with women in training and asking what keeps them returning.
