I’m Max. I am interested in how sport changes what we feel ready to attempt—and how that courage travels between women.

Confidence began on the mat.

Before arriving at Dartmouth, I competed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in China, earning silver in the 62 kg white-belt division. Training and competing alongside other women helped me build a confidence I carried with me to the United States.

Connection through movement.

As an international student, I sometimes struggle to express myself fully in English. Through movement, shared effort, and trust built in training, I have found another way to participate and get to know people.

Learning to say “I’ll try.”

That willingness to try reached into my academic life, giving me the courage to contact professors and pursue research opportunities. Sport has become an anchor in my life and a language I share with others.

SELECTED RESEARCH

I am Wanning (Max) He, a computer science master’s student at Dartmouth on a full-tuition scholarship. I work in generative AI and computer vision, exploring how machines create images and represent human movement. I lead research projects and have secured support through OpenAI’s Researcher Access Program and the NSF-supported ACCESS program.

Alongside my research, I create visual stories about women in sport. Drawing on my experience as a jiu-jitsu practitioner and international student, I explore how physical confidence and human connection can change what we feel ready to attempt—in sport, in research, and in everyday life. Through this work, I hope to encourage other women to begin their own experiments with strength and possibility.

A QUESTION THAT STAYS WITH ME一个始终留在心里的问题

FROM THE YAN XIAONAN ESSAY

WHAT IF WE CHEERED FOR THE ATHLETES WHO FINISH SECOND, TENTH, OR HUNDREDTH?

That question shapes the stories I want to tell: the effort, choices and persistence that make a sporting life.

The encouragement we find in an ordinary day.

At Dartmouth, I notice athletes gathering over meals. Seeing them together makes sport part of everyday campus life, and their presence can encourage people who do not think of themselves as athletic. I want to bring women’s stories into that same shared space.

At the Same Table is a proposed photography exhibition featuring women in Dartmouth sports, including rugby, and women I know through New York boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and MMA gyms. Portraits and personal accounts would follow training, time together, and moments of rest, and be shown in a Dartmouth dining hall alongside photo essays and short videos for Instagram.《同一张餐桌》拟记录 Dartmouth 女子橄榄球等运动中的女性,以及我在纽约拳击、巴西柔术和 MMA 馆认识的女性。
