AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORK作品导读

Friends have told me that I became more confident after moving to the United States. When I think back, I can trace that change to an earlier chapter: training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in China, and sharing a mat with women whose strength encouraged me to try.

In August 2025, before arriving at Dartmouth, I entered a jiu-jitsu competition in China and earned silver in the 62 kg white-belt division. In my video, I describe that experience as both a source of regret and an experience that taught me confidence. What stayed with me was the willingness to put myself into an unfamiliar situation and participate.

As an international student, I sometimes struggle to express myself fully in English. Through sport, I have found another way to connect: through movement, shared effort, and the trust built in training. I can participate and get to know people even when finding the right words is difficult.

That willingness to try also reached into my academic life. In the video, I recall writing to a professor because I wanted to join his research group. The question in my head shifted from “Can I do this?” to “I’ll give it a try.” Sport gave me an anchor and the courage to pursue research.

Today, I work in generative AI and computer vision at Dartmouth. Alongside research, I continue to train and create stories about women in sport. I am interested in how physical confidence and human connection change what we feel ready to attempt in everyday life.

From women competing in the UFC to athletes around Dartmouth, I keep noticing how one person’s commitment can encourage someone watching. A viewer responded to this jiu-jitsu video by saying that she hoped to enter a competition the following year. That is one small, concrete example of the connection I hope these stories can create.

At the Same Table grows from this experience. I want to photograph women at Dartmouth and in New York training communities, and bring their stories into the dining hall, where people can encounter them during an ordinary day. I hope someone who has never thought of herself as athletic might see a place for herself, too.
